Youth Group Showcase Talent in Offerton Exhibition

This week a group of young people from the R Time Youth Project showcased their talents to the local community in a photography exhibition at Offerton Community Centre.

The exhibition is the culmination of a seven-week photography programme led by SAZ MEDIA, a local Social Enterprise whose mission is to be recognised within the community as the go-to place for creative content that inspires positive social change. This unique programme supported the young people of Offerton to gain photography skills and improve their knowledge of digital media, enabling them to gain confidence, inspiration, and empowerment.

As part of the programme, the young people took part in workshops and visited local landmarks. The project began in the Community Centre, and the initial sessions taught the young people how to work with lights, cameras, and accessories. Before venturing into the local community to capture objects and local life. The group also visited Lyme Park and photographed the inside of the mansion house and some of the surrounding moorland, ancient woodlands and farm life.

Sara Auty, Executive Director, SAZ MEDIA, said:

“It’s been an incredible experience working with R Time and the young people at Offerton Community Centre. The imagery these young people have created speaks for itself and has created a must-see exhibition. From street photography to portraits, light painting to nature photography. It’s been a journey of exploration and an example to all young people that you can achieve and contribute positively to the community.”

Councillor Colin Foster, Cabinet Member for Children, Family Services & Education and R Time Advisory Board Member added:

“The benefits of art on young people’s development are well-documented. From the progression of brain function and fine motor skills to the channelling of emotional expression, art is fundamental for improving the lives and ambitions of our youth. This project was incredibly successful at engaging the young people of Offerton, and the exhibition allows them the opportunity to showcase their hard work for the wider community to enjoy.”

To conclude the experience, all the young people received a certificate and zine of their published collective work to keep as a memento and evidence of their creative skills gained. There is another chance to view the images; they will feature in a more extensive SAZ MEDIA exhibition at Merseyway Shopping Centre, 7-9 April.
