Walking bag must-haves

You don’t need to scale mountains or trek for miles to feel the benefits of walking. Whether you’re heading to your local park, a canal path, or exploring woodland trails, having the right bits and bobs in your bag can make your walk comfier, safer, and more enjoyable.

Here’s our guide to packing for a perfect walk, no matter how that looks for you.

Everyday essentials:

Perfect for solo strolls, dog walks, or meet-ups with a mate.

  • Reusable water bottle – Always stay hydrated, especially on warmer days.
  • Phone – For safety, maps, music, or to snap a scenic photo.
  • Weather protection – A foldable raincoat or compact umbrella can be a lifesaver.
  • Comfy layers – Weather can change, so bring a jumper or lightweight jacket.
  • Sunglasses & sunscreen – Don’t underestimate that British sunshine!
  • Tissues or wipes – For muddy hands or unexpected sneezes.
  • Snack – A banana, oat bar or handful of nuts to keep you going.

For families on the move:

For shorter, slower-paced walks where the journey is just as fun as the destination.

  • Snacks and drinks for everyone – Hangry kids? No thanks.
  • Wet wipes and tissues – Sticky fingers and muddy knees are part of the fun.
  • Bug magnifying glass or scavenger hunt sheet – Keep little ones engaged and curious. Download your free copy here: https://bit.ly/3Ymb0fa
  • Spare layers or waterproofs – Weather-proofing = meltdown-proofing.
  • Mini first aid kit – Just in case of scraped knees or surprise stings.
  • Pram-friendly bag clips or hooks – For easy access on the go.

Top tip: Head to the sensory garden at Life Leisure Hazel Grove for a fun walking add-on!

Longer walks and hikes:

For those longer, more challenging walks where you’re chasing views and elevation.

  • Offline trail map or walking app route (like AllTrails or Komoot) – Don’t rely on signal alone!
  • Portable charger – Keep your phone alive for emergencies and photos.
  • Snacks – Think trail mix, energy bars or sandwiches.
  • Walking poles (optional) – Great for uneven terrain or longer distances.
  • Spare socks – Dry feet = happy feet.
  • Basic first aid kit – Blister plasters, antiseptic wipes and paracetamol.
  • Thermal flask – A warm cuppa or soup on a cold trail hits different.

Social strollers:

Ideal for anyone enjoying gentle walks or joining one of our group sessions.

  • Water bottle and snack – Light nourishment, easy to carry.
  • Comfortable shoes – Supportive and weather-appropriate.
  • Fold-up seat or walking stick – Handy for short breaks or uneven paths.
  • A buddy’s number – Always let someone know your plans.
  • Notebook – Jot down local wildlife or thoughts as you stroll.
  • Hat and gloves (in cooler months) – Don’t let the chill cut your walk short.

At the end of the day, it’s about enjoying the moment, at your own pace. Whether your bag’s filled with snacks, binoculars or just a bottle of water, the most important thing is that you’re stepping outside, moving more, and soaking up what Stockport has to offer.
