Exercise Referral

Physical Activity Referral in Stockport (PARiS) is a six month exercise referral scheme delivered by Life Leisure. Designed to help people doing less than 30-minutes of exercise per week and living with chronic health conditions, to become active and improve their health.

A joint partnership between Life Leisure and Public Health, the scheme is delivered by a strong and experienced team of health and exercise professionals, who provide guidance, support and motivation towards health improvement.

Research shows that exercise can help not only your physical health but boost you mental and emotional wellbeing also.

The PARiS service continues to accept new referrals to the scheme and there is currently a three-four week wait for first appointments. Where possible, initial consultations are being delivered via telephone or video consultation but face to face appointments can be happily facilitated if preferred.

PARiS delivers over 20 supervised activity sessions across Stockport per week. We encourage all sessions to be pre booked via the Life Leisure app to avoid disappointment. Support in how to do this can be provided by your PARiS Coach.

Access to gym, swimming and other mainstream classes at Life Leisure hubs may also be an option and can be discussed with your PARiS Coach.

Are you physically inactive (undertaking less than 30-minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise) and not a current member at a Life Leisure facility?

  • Do you suffer from a chronic medical condition such as Hypertension, Diabetes Type 2, Joint Pain, COPD or Depression?
  • Have you had a heart attack, Stroke or CABG?

If you feel you meet the criteria, then please speak to your GP or Practice Nurse and ask for a referral to the PARiS scheme. Alternatively, if you feel you meet the criteria and would like to self-refer, please complete our self referral form here.

Want to join in?

To access the Stay Steady programme, participants must have one of the following:

  • A fear of falling
  • A history of falling
  • Feel unsteady on their feet due to limited strength and/or balance

New individuals will meet one of our Stay Steady instructors 1:1 for an initial assessment to discuss medical history and personal falls history, as well as undertaking some simple functional exercises to assess whether the Stay Steady programme is suitable for their needs. We encourage people to take part in the classes as much as possible and therefore there may be situations where a person may not be deemed suitable for the programme. In this instance, we may offer alternative activities or put them in touch with our colleagues from the Steady in Stockport service.

Once an initial assessment has been completed and the individual has been cleared to participate, they can access any of the Stay Steady classes. After six weeks, they may also be given a home exercise plan, so they can also practice the exercises at home in their own time.

Once you have completed the Stay Steady programme, we highly recommend that people continue with the progress they have made by attending one of the maintenance classes. These classes are £3.50 per session and follow similar principles to that of the Stay Steady programme.
