Looking for ways to keep the kids active, happy, and off their screens this summer, without breaking the bank? You’re not alone!
You’ll be pleased to know that building healthy habits starts with simple everyday moments and doesn’t have to mean expensive sports clubs.
Here are 5 things to do with your kids in Stockport this summer that are friendly on the bank account.
- Visit our community sensory garden
Cost: Free
Location: Life Leisure Hazel Grove
A hidden gem in Hazel Grove and a fairly new addition to the area, our Community Sensory Garden is a calm, colourful space designed to engage all five senses. Families can take a stroll, explore different textures and scents, take a moment to slow down together and even enjoy a picnic.
It’s perfect for little ones who need space to explore, for parents who want a peaceful escape in the middle of a busy day, and for those with special educational needs.
As well as being open to explore in your own time, the garden also hosts a range of free activities. Keep an eye out on our Active Communities Facebook page for all the details.
- Go for a splash at your local pool
Cost: From £3.00 per child and £5.00 per adult. Under 3s go free
Locations: Life Leisure Avondale, Cheadle, Grand Central, Hazel Grove and Romiley
Swimming is not only a great way for kids to burn energy and build water confidence, it’s also a fun family activity that feels like a treat! Whether you’re splashing in the Oasis pool with little ones, or flying down the slides, swimming is one of the best summer activities for kids (and adults too!)
If you need a more specific type of swim, like parent and toddler, adult only, or SEND friendly, we have that too.

- Scavenger hunt
Cost: Free
Location: Anywhere!
Keep little legs moving and curious minds busy with a fun scavenger hunt.
You can make your own or download ours for free and complete it in the garden, local park, or on the way to school! It’s packed with things to look out for and encourages children to use their senses to explore their surroundings. There’s also a list of other fun challenges and mini-games you can do while you’re out and about too.

- Explore natural beauty in Stockport
Cost: Free
Location: All over Stockport!
Grab your walking shoes and sunhats (or wellies and coats!), and head outside for some fresh air. Walking is the simplest form of exercise and shouldn’t be overlooked. Kids don’t always need slides and swings to have fun. An open field, a muddy pathway, or a new place to explore and get imaginative can provide hours of fun.
GM walking has a huge list of local walks to look through, and you can filter to choose the best route for you. Whether that’s pram/wheelchair accessible, dog friendly, or has a café nearby!
- SmileyWorld art trail
Cost: Free
Location: Throughout Stockport Town Centre (until 15th September)
This summer, the SmileyWorld art trail transforms Stockport into a giant outdoor gallery! Featuring colourful, playful sculptures inspired by emoji-style icons and custom-designed by local artists, it’s a fantastic motivation to get everyone walking and exploring Stockport.
Set your family a challenge of finding all the sculptures; snap fun selfies, and get your steps in!
You don’t need a packed schedule or expensive outings to make this summer memorable. Just 30 minutes of movement a day helps kids (and grown-ups) feel better, sleep better, and stay healthy, both physically and mentally.
Move more, spend less. Winner winner.
