Friendly football tournament raises £1,400 for charity

A charity football tournament organised by Life Leisure has raised more than £1,400 in honour of a former colleague.

The seven-a-side event and family fun day, which took place on Saturday, May 11, was held at Stockport Sports Village.

It was organised in honour of former Life Leisure Operations Director Martin Harriman, with funds raised divided between the Stroke Association and Stockport and District mental health charity Mind.

Twenty four teams made up of local businesses, friendship groups and gym members battled it out through a series of matches on the day, but it was the ‘Thursday Knights’ who beat ‘Baillie Ellis’ in the final and presented with the winners’ trophy by the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Graham Greenhalgh.

Jess Brown, Duty Manager at Stockport Sports Village, hailed the event as a huge success. She said: “This was a fantastic event organised in memory of a hugely respected former colleague.

“The weather was perfect, and the players put in a brilliant effort in what ended up being a thrilling tournament.”

Jess, who organised the day, added: “We’d like to thank everyone who came, from the players and organisers, to the families and friends who took part in all the events on the side-line and helped raise such a fantastic sum for good causes.”

In total there were 54 goals scored on the day, with semi-finalist ‘Bocca Seniors’ and ‘Park the Bus’ also putting in a fantastic effort.

Visitors also enjoyed music, food and drink, soft play, children’s games and a raffle, with prizes donated by Life Leisure, New Balance, Manchester United Foundation, Manchester City Charity Support and Martins Bakery, to name just a few.
